Congo Coffee – Kivu Region
Coffee from the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is gaining recognition in specialty coffee circles for its rich, fruit-forward profiles and deep body. Grown along the lush hillsides surrounding Lake Kivu, this region shares terroir characteristics with neighboring Rwanda and Burundi but offers its own unique expression due to its volcanic soils and varied microclimates.
Region: North & South Kivu, Eastern DRC
Cooperative: Example – SOPACDI (Solidarité Paysanne pour la Promotion des Actions Café et Développement Intégral)
Number of Farmers: ~11,000 smallholder farmers (SOPACDI specifically), including many women
Altitude: 1,460–2,000 masl
Varieties: Bourbon, Blue Mountain, Rumangabo, Jackson
Processing: Fully washed, dried on raised beds or patios; some producers experimenting with naturals
